Dr. Anne Elizabeth Simon visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology
Invited by Prof. HU Zhihong, Dr. Anne Elizabeth Simon, from the University of Maryland (USA), visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences on May 31th. Dr. Simon is one of the world-recognized virologists, and she also serves as an editor of the Journal of Virology.
Dr. Simon’s seminar was entitled “Non-Template Functions of an RNA Virus Genome”. During her talk, she described the mechanisms on how 3’UTR genomic sequence regulates the replication and expression of virus itself. The 3’UTR can form a functionally three-dimensional structure that is similar to a tRNA, which binds to the P/E site of 60S ribosome, thus serves as 3’ translational enhancer. Her lab also discovered that the 3’UTR structure can form interactive domain with coding RNA sequence to regulate viral processes in replication and expression. Her research work highlights the significance of the higher order structure of the 3’region of RNA genome.
As an editor of the Journal of Virology, she shared her experience on the process of article reviewing, and gave valuable advice on the manuscript preparation and submission.
Dr. Simon’s talk ended with a very warm applause.
